As the Los Angeles Chargers aim to strengthen their roster and support quarterback Justin Herbert, the 2025 free agent class offers exciting options next season for Jim Harbaugh. Evaluating player performances during the 2024 season, several key names stand out as potential targets to address critical team needs such as offensive line support, defensive reinforcements, and playmakers on offense. Below, we highlight some of the top free agents the Chargers could pursue.

Offensive Line Reinforcements

The Chargers prioritized protecting Herbert through the 2024 draft by selecting Joe Alt with their first pick, but given the inconsistent play from Zion Johnson, Bradley Bozeman, and Trey Pipkins, improvements are needed. Two key targets to upgrade this unit include:

Trey Smith (Kansas City Chiefs): While unlikely to go to a division rival, Smith is a powerful and dynamic guard. With a proven track record of strong performances in both run-blocking and pass-protection, he could provide a critical boost to the Chargers’ interior line.

Drew Dalman (Atlanta Falcons)starting center for the Atlanta Falcons, known for his agility, technique, and intelligence on the offensive line. His quick hands and footwork help maintain interior protection and create running lanes. Dalman's leadership and consistency would be a much-needed improvement at the center position and help mask inconsistent guard play.

Defensive Stars

The Chargers’ defense has shown promise but struggled with consistency. Acquiring versatile defenders could elevate the unit:

Nick Bolton (Kansas City Chiefs): Again, unlikely to switch to a divisional rival, but as a cornerstone of the Chiefs’ defense, Bolton’s elite tackling and play recognition would solidify the Chargers’ linebacker corps.

Josh Sweat (Philadelphia Eagles): While still technically under contract, Sweat's deal has no guaranteed money after this season and will likely be pushing for a new contract. An edge rusher with a knack for creating pressure, Sweat could be an impactful addition alongside Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, especially if one of these two aren't around next year.

Secondary Improvements

Strengthening the secondary remains a priority, particularly as younger players develop:

Mike Hilton (Cincinnati Bengals): One of the league’s top slot corners, Hilton’s experience and ability to handle quick receivers would address a pressing need for coverage in the middle of the field and would be an interesting add to Jesse Minter's defense.

D.J. Reed (New York Jets): D.J. Reed is a standout cornerback who excels in man-to-man and zone schemes, combining speed and awareness to shut down receivers and create turnovers.

Offensive Playmakers

In the past, the Chargers boasted a potent offense, but cap casualties of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams as well as inconsistency at the wide receiver position have exposed vulnerabilities. Bolstering skill positions should be a focus:

Tee Higgins (Cincinnati Bengals): Higgins would provide a massive boost and likely become the Chargers WR1. After torching the Chargers for 9 catches, 148 yards, and a touchdown in week 11 at SOFi, his size, contested-catch ability, and skillset were on full display for the team who should open the bag to sign him.

Keenan Allen (Chicago Bears): A man who needs no introduction to Chargers fans needs to come home. A cap casualty in the 2024 offseason led to his trade to the Bears, but given his lack of production and overall play of the Bears, it's time to mend this relationship and have Keenan retire where he belongs.

Running Back Options

With a brand new running back room in 2024, there have been glimpses of dominance and mediocracy. With J.K. Dobbins here on a one-year loaner deal and Gus Edwards on a two-year deal, the two top free agents the Chargers should explore are:

J.K. Dobbins (Los Angeles Chargers): Currently performing very well in his 2024 comeback season, Dobbins should be the Chargers top choice and resign this man. Through week 12, he has racked up an impressive 766 yards on 158 touches (4.8 AVG) and 8 touchdowns.

Nick Chubb (Cleveland Browns): While coming off a knee injury, Chubb’s track record of production could make him an intriguing short-term addition to complement J.K. Dobbins if the Chargers decide to not resign Gus Edwards.

Veteran Leadership

Adding experienced players who can contribute on and off the field is another avenue the Chargers could explore:

Justin Simmons (Atlanta Falcons): A versatile safety with leadership qualities, Simmons would add stability and depth to the secondary. While his 2024 stats haven't been spectacular, the thought of him paired with Derwin James would be fun to watch.

DeMarcus Lawrence (Dallas Cowboys): Known for his toughness and run-stopping ability, Lawrence could provide rotational depth and mentorship for the defensive line. This only seems like an option if the Chargers decide to move on from Khalil Mack, but chances are they stick with the man currently on their roster.

Verdict

The Chargers have a lot of opportunities to capitalize on the 2025 free-agent market. By addressing needs at offensive line, defense, and skill positions, the team can continue building around Justin Herbert and aim for that much-needed postseason success. Players like Drew Dalman, Nick Bolton, and Tee Higgins stand out as ideal fits, capable of making an immediate impact. The key will be balancing high-impact signings with long-term sustainability, ensuring the team remains competitive in the AFC West.
